The NEC Writing & Learning Center

New England Conservatory believes that to be successful today, musicians need to develop professional skills in writing, critical thinking, project organization, and time management.  As a result, NEC supports as an essential community resource: the NEC Writing & Learning Center, a one-on-one tutorial service designed to assist undergraduates, graduate students, and staff in the writing of course papers, theses, and personal/professional tasks, such as cover letters and personal statements for graduate school, financial aid letters, grant proposals, artistic and professional bios, personal website text, and creative work.

By engaging learners in an intensive yet relaxed dialogue about their writing projects, WLC tutors help illuminate the patterns of thought that underlie every stage of the process.  One tutorial may consist wholly of collective brainstorming over a topic in order to form a coherent thesis and a basic plan for its development; another might focus simply on revising essay mechanics and style, but always in a collaborative way.

International students working on their English language skills have found the intensive one-on-one tutorials at the Writing & Learning Center a particularly essential feature of their academic and professional experience at NEC.
