The year 2009 marked the 200th anniversary of the death of composer Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). "Papa" Haydn populated the music stands of pianists, orchestras, and string quartets with some of the largest and richest repertoires in the history of Western music. NEC celebrated that legacy with generous servings from the Haydn cornucopia.

To begin the year, NEC piano chair Bruce Brubaker organized performances by NEC College and Perparatory School students of all of Haydn's piano sonatas, in concerts at NEC and in Los Angeles.

All hands on Haydn

“Dear Haydn, how I love you! But other pianists? They’re rather lukewarm towards you. Which is a great shame.”
—Sviatoslav Richter

Piano sonatas in Los Angeles

NEC student pianists and Bruce Brubaker were flown out to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2009 for a series of ten Haydn concerts, January 25 through October 25. These were part of the Museum's "Sundays Live" concert series and were available as live streaming audio.

Many of these concerts were recorded. Visitors to NEC's Firestone Library may listen to recordings of these and other NEC concerts.

Complete piano sonatas at NEC

Under the artistic direction of piano department chair Bruce Brubaker, NEC College and Preparatory piano students began 2009 with performances of all of Haydn's piano sonatas—more than fifty of them. While these works are crucial to the piano literature, most of them are seldom heard outside the practice room. This was a chance to hear them performed by the next generation of great concert pianists.
