Melinda Sullivan is movement and dance teacher for undergraduate and graduate opera programs at New England Conservatory, where she has taught since 1990. She developed this unique Movement for Singers program under the guidance of John Moriarty. It incorporates body fundamentals, improvisation, and dance styles to bring out expressivity in the body.

Sullivan has also choreographed for NEC opera productions, most recently on Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld (in photo). Sullivan also assisted on NEC's 2007 double-bill Dido and Aeneus (Purcell) and Misfortunes of Orpheus (Milhaud). For the last two years, Sullivan has also taught and choreographed at Yale University. Performances with Yale Collegium were the English masque Brittania Triumphans (Lawes) and Moliere and his Musicians (Lully and Charpentier).


Melinda Sullivan has an active performing career. She was a major part of the Boston modern dance scene in the 1980s as soloist with Beth Soll & Company. Later she discovered early dance with Ingrid Brainard and Ken Pierce, with whom she still performs. In 1999, she began her long association with Boston Early Music Festival (BEMF), first as baroque dancer, then as ballet mistress, and now as assistant choreographer to Lucy Graham. Their most recent production, the fully-staged baroque opera Psyche (Lully), met with international acclaim in June 2007.
