Faina Kofman was born and educated in Russia. She graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude from Gnessin College of Music in Moscow, where she studied with Samuel Alumian and Evelina Gorkina, and received her Master of Music at the New England Conservatory, where she studied with Leonard Shure and Yuriko Takahashi. In 1982, she was invited to teach at the Preparatory School by Jean Stackhouse, where she has been on the faculty ever since.
Kofman has dedicated her career to teaching young students, many of whom have gone on to pursue careers in piano performance, teaching, and composition at New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Mannes The New School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, Boston University, University of Michigan, and Indiana University School of Music. Many of her students have also gone on to pursue other careers at schools such as Stanford, Harvard, Tufts, MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, and Cornell.
Her students have been consistent winners at regional, national and international competitions such as the Chopin Foundation of the United States Scholarship Competition, International Piano Competition (Senigallia, Italy), Chiang Wen Yeh International Young Artist Competition (Washington, DC), Hamamatsu International Piano Academy (Japan), Young Artists International Piano Competition (Eastman School of Music), The Commonwealth Competition for Young Pianists, New England Piano Teachers Association (NEPTA) Competitions, Harvard Musical Association High School Competition.
Her students have performed a variety of piano concerti as soloists with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory Youth Symphony Orchestra, Washington Youth Chamber Orchestra, New England Philharmonic Orchestra, Greater Marlborough Symphony Orchestra, Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, Brockton Symphony Orchestra, Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Stanford University Symphony Orchestra.
Kofman’s educational philosophy strives to instill in her students a disciplined approach to in-depth musicianship and technical skills, and most importantly to inspire a lifelong appreciation and love for music. Besides teaching children, she enjoys working with adults and regularly offers her expertise to aspiring piano teachers.
