These courses are a rewarding way for guitarists to make music with other people while improving their own musical skills. A fun alternative to the private lesson format, playing in a group can be less challenging in some ways, and more challenging in others! Small group size encourages interaction, and allows for individual attention when needed. Ensemble work is an excellent way to sharpen your fundamental musicianship, while also enjoying the dynamics of playing in a group setting.

Guitar Ensemble I

Ensemble I will study, prepare, and perform music for guitar trio or quartet. The group will play literature from all stylistic periods, with emphasis given to developing good ensemble skills – dialogue, critical listening, non-verbal communication, and timing. When possible, other instruments may play a guest role. The class will take a progressive approach towards the development of sight-reading skills, though the primary goal will be on prepared music and assignments. For early-intermediate players, who can read some music but are not fluent at sight-reading.

Guitar Ensemble II

Ensemble II will study advanced repertoire from all stylistic periods for classical guitar trio or quartet. The course is for classical guitarists who are comfortable sight-reading music, and who want to play in a small ensemble that explores more challenging literature written for guitar, as well as transcription of works for other instruments. Participants will work on ensemble communication, concentration skill, timing, and musicianship. Emphasis will be on developing an ensemble which prepares and performs several of the more important works for multiple guitars. For intermediate to advanced guitarists.
