First-year undergraduates applying to the Bachelor of Music degree are expected to demonstrate an advanced level of accomplishment in performance with potential to learn and grow as musical artists. Graduation from an accredited secondary school (or its equivalent) is a prerequisite for enrollment, with an expected minimum overall academic grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale).

Applicants to the Undergraduate Diploma should demonstrate knowledge, repertoire, and experience comparable to that of B.M. applicants, but are expected to meet a higher performance standard. Although not an academic degree, graduation from an accredited secondary school or its equivalent is a prerequisite for admission.

Transcripts: At the time of application, first-year applicants should submit an official high school transcript. If a student has attended more than one high school, transcripts from all high schools attended should be submitted.

Homeschooled applicants should work with their families to prepare and submit a transcript showing subjects studied, materials used, a parent's/tutor's evaluation of the student's work, and the parent's/tutor's signature. Homeschooled applicants who have completed at least one semester in a traditional high school should submit an official transcript from that institution.

All admitted first-year students who plan to enroll at NEC must submit a final transcript in the summer before their matriculation. Transcripts should show the date of conferral of the high school diploma and all final grades. Homeschooled applicants must submit a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

Recommendations: Two (2) recommendation letters are required.

  1. Artistic recommendation from your private studio teacher addressing your musical work to date and readiness to study music at a conservatory level. (If your private studio teacher is unable to write a recommendation, please ask another music teacher or ensemble leader.)
  2. Academic recommendation from a non-music teacher addressing your writing and cognitive abilities.

English Language Requirement: Any applicant whose first language was not English should use the link at the beginning of this paragraph to review our English language requirement. If an applicant has recently completed at least four years in a school in which English was the primary language of instruction, s/he may be eligible for an exemption from the TOEFL requirement and should review the instructions for submitting a waiver request.

SAT/ACT: SAT and ACT scores are not required and do not factor into our admission decision. Freshman applicants who wish to submit recent test results may do so using the following school codes: SAT (Code: 3659) or ACT (Code: 1872).

No offer of admission will be made until the Office of Admissions receives all required documents.
