Johan Katz '66, '68 M.M.Conductor, Johan M. Katz '66, '68 M.M. is hailed as energetic and charming with a soft and clear musicianship that captivates listeners.  Concertgoers are amazed at the expression, phrasing and precision he extracts from his orchestras.  He has conducted across Europe and North America.  In Russia, however, he has worked extensively with the St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra under Alexander Titov (2006, 2008, 2009), St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra (under the Ex. Nikolai Kornev) in 2007, Capella Orchestra of St. Petersburg (2010), Symphony Orchestra Tomsk Philharmonic (2008, 2009), Arkhangelsk Chamber Orchestra Philharmonic (2007), Philharmonia Orchestra of Murmansk, Kislovodsk State Orchestra, Sochi Symphony Orchestra, orchestras in Krasnodar and Tuapse, Maikop, Velikey Novgorod  and many others. He is principal Guest Conductor of the Pskov State Philharmonic in Pskov. Currently, he resides in the Oxted, UK and conducts his professional chamber orchestra The Sinfonietta.  2012-01-26

Dr. J LanYe '68 M.M., Vocal PerformanceDr. J LanYe ’68 M.M. is the Director of the National American Spirituals Solo Voice Competition, which she also founded. 2009 marked the first year of the competition, which culminated in the first place winner, mezzo-soprano Melissa Davis.  As a part of the competition, Melissa also won an engagement singing with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

In August of 2011, Dr. LanYe presented the world premiere of her opera Highway to Canaan about the Underground Railroad. She wrote the opera's music, story, and lyrics, and produced the opera without any financial support from organizations, grants or foundations. The opera was written for chamber orchestra and includes strings, brass, woodwinds, English horn, banjo, piano and percussion. Dr. LanYe's uplifting story emphasizes messages of, "faith, unity, determination, family and courage..." Dr. LanYe currently lives in Port Clinton, Ohio. 2011-08-09

Halim El-Dabh '53 M.M., '07 H.D., CompositionHalim El-Dabh ’53 M.M., ’07 H.D. and his works were featured live on WNYU in the winter of 2009. He is a composer-in-residence for the New York ensemble Memisis. He currently lives in Kent, Ohio. 2009-08-17






Bob Lague '68, '71 M.M., Music Education, Piano PerformanceBob Lague ’68, ’71 M.M. received the Most Valuable Teacher Award from the Boston Red Sox on ceremonies held before a Red Sox vs. Yankees game at Fenway Park on July 26, 2008. In May, 2009, he conduced the Lexington Pops Chorus in a concert of Civil War music to honor the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Rep. Jay Kaufmann, a Lexington member of the State House, was narrator and members of the 13th Regiment presented the colors. Bob was President of the NEC Chorus under the direction of Lorna Cooke DeVaron and was President of the Alumni Association for several years. His father, Alfred Lague, was a member of the class of ’49 and ’51. Bob lives in Woburn, Mass. 2009-10-01


Robert Deutsch '68, '70 M.M., Violin PerformanceRobert Deutsch '68, '70 M.M. is currently performing recitals and chamber music in the New Jersey area. He performed a cello-piano recital along with pianist Helen Krotoff in Suffern, NY on November 23rd, 2008. On February 22nd, 2009, Bob joined Brian Harlow, organist and choirmaster of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Morristown, NJ to give premiere performances of Variations on Jesu, meine Freude by Karl Höller and Oration for Cello and Organ by NEC's own Daniel Pinkham. He has two children - Alan, age 5 and Anna age 11. 2009-08-05
